- Split and Cracked Boards
Most of the splits and cracks in the board are so minor, and the surface appears so sturdy, that most of us disregard it. However, these cracks and splits could be the beginning of a much larger problem.
Before this crack spreads and becomes worse, have it changed.
- Flaking, Peeling and Discolored Boards
Peeling, flaking or discolored boards are indicating that they either need changing or a good wash. Sometimes even newly painted decks tend to peel and flake. That’s a sign of a job badly done. When the surface is not well-cared for before painting, peeling happens.
- Loose Connections
Anything that wobbles is asking to be fixed. Railings are usually the first ones to lose its connections and begin to shake and vibrate badly. This can lead to severe accidents if they give away when someone is leaning on them.
Another sign of a loose connection is when the board and steps creak loudly when they are stepped on. It’s better to step away from them immediately and have it fixed before it gets bad.
We all know that protruding nails are a bad sign and that they should be fixed immediately. Not just because they are indicating a worn-out deck, but also because how injurious they can be.
Apart from that, if you only see nail heads at the connection of decks, it’s a sign that the deck is old and was built before the codes and screws were updated. Today, decks offer extra safety and durability because they are connected using metal joist hangers, screws and other connections.
Make sure to have it checked and secured to make it sturdy and safer.
- Wood Rot
If any part of your deck is rotting and has frayed ends, then it needs to be fixed. One of the common mistakes most people make is, cover that rotten wood area for safety purposes. What they don’t realize is that the wood has begun to decay and this warped and sprayed ends would extend to other parts of the deck and make weak and feeble.
