Mistakes to Avoid when Painting the Exterior of Your House
Tuesday, March 15, 2016
You’re at the hardware or paint store standing in front of a wall of color, trying to imagine which combination will work best for your house. You want it to reflect your personal style, and you know what you like, but imagining an entire house in a certain color can be a challenge—and even harder when you have to choose a suite of colors.
Here are a few common mistakes to avoid when it comes time to paint your house.
1. Don’t assume that more colors means higher cost. If you have a house with a lot of detail that will really pop with complimentary (or even contrasting) colors, work with your painters to find an ideal combination. Use your imagination, spend some time on Pinterest, and flag magazine pictures that you like for inspiration.
2. It’s a great idea to accentuate unique details about the exterior of your house but don’t make the mistake of drawing attention to things that should melt into the background, like downspouts, air conditioning units, or uneven windows. Let these things fade from view and instead choose to draw attention to elements of your house that you love.
3. Try not to ignore neighboring houses. You don’t have to match or copy but it’s best not to clash. You’ll only regret it if you need to put your house on the market since it could turn buyers away or require that you agree to the cost of repainting in order to sell. Color schemes that fit the neighborhood and blend well with immediate neighbors are the best choice.
4. Remember your changing landscape. You may be planning and painting in the summer when brilliant flowering trees and bushes are in bloom, but how will the colors you choose look with fall foliage or a bare winter yard? Do you have a lot of trees on your property? Heavily wood lots plus a gray winter sky will make dark colors look even darker for a long portion of the year and may even camouflage your home.
